Woman Turns Into a Gorilla: Old-Fashioned Freak Show at a Brabant Fair

A woman who transforms into a gorilla right before the audience’s eyes will be appearing for the first time this year at the Uden fair. The show “Zambora The Gorilla Woman” pays homage to the freak shows and folk entertainment of the past. Such attractions are rarely found at Dutch carnivals these days.

Visitors take a seat on benches in a small covered theater. There, they are treated to a show lasting about five minutes. The story revolves around the ‘gorilla girl’ Zambora, who is said to have grown up in the jungle. Because of this, she has the power to transform into an ape.

The transformation is achieved using classic theater techniques, enhanced with smoke and lighting effects. The audience watches the woman change right before their eyes. Afterward, the gorilla makes a brief appearance. The show is described as a “thriller show” and is suitable for ages 6 and up.

This nostalgic experience is owned by the eccentric Flemish entrepreneur Arthur Cardini. He also acts as a barker, trying to lure passersby inside. He wears an outfit reminiscent of an old-fashioned colonial explorer.

“Zambora the Gorilla Woman” will be at the Uden fair through Sunday, July 26. The admission tickets for the ride already feature a rather unsettling warning: “We are not responsible for any accidents that may occur.”
